Rape victim, kin barge into police HQ, demand action
WOMAN ALLEGED THAT HER RELATIVE DRUGGED AND RAPED HER FOR NEARLY 3 YEARS
NEW DELHI: A 21-year-old Delhi University (DU) student and her family are running from pillar to post for the last 45 days, demanding the arrest of their relative who allegedly raped the woman for almost three years and blackmailed her with her objectionable photographs.
On Thursday, the woman and her family stormed into the Delhi Police headquarters and demanded police and media attention, after police chief Amulya Patnaik flagged off five all-women patrol vans on International Women’s Day.
They accused the police of protecting the alleged accused by not arresting him. They said that despite complaints, the police had failed to recover the relative’s mobiles, which contained the woman’s photos and video clips.
After the family lodged protest, the family was allowed to meet Patnaik. “The police chief has promised that he will personally look into our case and all necessary action will be taken,” the woman’s uncle said.
A case of rape and criminal intimidation was registered on the woman’s complaint at the Vasant Kunj north police station on January 22. The woman alleged that she was only 17 years old when her relative drugged her and clicked her objectionable photos in 2014. “He began threatening to upload the photos on social media and raped her several times at his home in Masoodpur and other places between June 2014 and December 2017,” said the uncle.
The family claimed they met assistant commissioner, additional DCP (southwest), joint and special commissioners, but no progress was made in the case. “The relative secured one month interim relief from the concerned session court. He went absconding after the relief period expired. Our teams are looking for him,” said Ajay Chaudhary, joint commissioner of police (New Delhi range).
