INDIGO, SPICEJET AND GOAIR SHIFT PART OF THEIR OPERATIONS TO T2, PAVING WAY FOR THE EXPANSION OF T1

NEW DELHI: Indigo on Friday announced that it will operate flights to 10 cities from Terminal 2 from March 25.

The airline said that passengers bound for Amritsar, Bagdogra, Bengaluru, Bhubaneshwar, Chennai, Raipur, Srinagar, Udaipur, Vadodara and Vishakhapatnam on flight numbers 6E 2000 to 6E 2999 will have to board their flights from Terminal 2 instead of Terminal 1. From next week, three airlines — Indigo, Spicejet and Goair — will shift a part of their operations to T2, paving way for the expansion of the already congested Terminal 1 to start. Goair has already shifted to the renovated terminal in October last year but Indigo had approached the Supreme Court against the move initiated by the ministry of civil aviation.

The court on February 23 had refused to interfere in the matter.

Spicejet, which had also refused to shift earlier, has now decided to move flights (SG 8000 to SG 8999) to seven destinations — Ahmedabad, Cochin, Goa, Gorakhpur, Patna, Pune and Surat — to Terminal 2.

“With the partial shift of operations of the two airlines to T2, passenger area for the flyers will increase from current available 25,917 sqm at Terminal 1 to a combined space of 62,010 sqm,” said a DIAL spokesperson.

This is a temporary move to ease the pressure of the fast growing traffic at T1. The move will enable the expansion works at Terminal 1 effectively.

T1 is set to be expanded from the current capacity of 20 million to 40 million per annum with 22 aerobridges and state-of-the-art infrastructure spanning all major areas of the airport. The renovation work will be completed within four years.
