Sketch helps cops nab man wanted for minor’s murder
NEWDELHI: The sketch of a suspect, prepared from the account of a victim’s friend, has led Delhi Police to solving the murder case of a schoolboy who was found dead in the Agra canal in south Delhi’s Jaitpur earlier this month. Police identified the arrested accused as 25-year-old Amar Nath, who hailed from Solapur in Maharashtra and lived near Jaitpur.
Nath had allegedly tried to sexually assault the boy. When the boy resisted and threatened to report the incident to his parents, Nath panicked and slit the boy’s throat with a knife. He then threw the body in the canal, said police.
Chinmoy Biswal, deputy commissioner of police (southeast), said the sketch of the suspect has many resemblances with Nath’s physical appearance such as a ring in his ear, his moustache, beard and hairstyle apart from other physical characteristics.
“It was a blind murder case where we were unaware of the killer and the motive. But the por- trait helped us identify and arrest the murderer,” said DCP Biswal.
The 11-year-old victim lived with his parents in Hari Nagar, Jaitpur. He was a Class 6 student at a government school. On February 28, the child’s father approached Jaitpur police station and filed a missing persons complaint. A kidnapping case was registered.
On March 3, the local police was informed that the body of a child was floating in the Agra canal. The body was fished out and sent to AIIMS mortuary for identification. Police called the boy’s father who confirmed that the body bore resemblances to his missing son.
“We added section 302 (murder) in the kidnapping case,” said Biswal.
During the probe, the investigating team learnt that the child was last seen by his 13-year-old classmate. The boy told police that he had seen his friend outside the school premises with an ‘uncle’ who wore an earring.
“We prepared a sketch from the details the boy provided. The portrait was shown to people living in Shivpuri, Meethapur, and other areas around Jaitpur and Faridabad border that led to Nath’s arrest,” added Biswal.
Nath’s interrogation revealed that on February 28, he consumed liquor and was loitering around Meethapur Chowk when he saw the child playing outside the school and lured him to an isolated place.
