Man shot dead in suspected ‘gang war’ in Pitampura

NEW DELHI: In a suspected case of gang war, a 27-year-old man was killed and a cigarette kiosk owner was critically injured after a group of five to six armed assailants allegedly opened indiscrimi­nate fire in northwest Delhi’s Pitampura on Friday afternoon.

More than a dozen bullets were fired, out of which at least eight hit the man, Monu Maan alias Nepali, in his head and other body parts , killing him on the spot. His friend, who was with him, survived the firing and managed to flee the scene without being hit.

The cigarette kiosk owner, police said, suffered two gunshots. He was admitted to Babu Jag Jivan Ram Hospital. His condition was stated to be critical, police said. Eleven bullet shells were recovered from the spot.

The deceased,monu Maan, was a resident of Alipur. Police said Maan had a criminal record and was last arrested in an attempt to murder case.

There were reports that Maan allegedly belonged to Gogi gang Born in 1991 in outer Delhi’s Alipur, Gogi father was a private contractor.

Police said Maan along with his friend Digvijay Saroha from Haryana’s Sonepat, who was also arrested with him in the attempt to murder case, had come to Rohini Court to attend a hearing in their case on Friday.

After attending the court’s proceeding­s, the duo went to a dhaba near Pitampura power house for lunch. The incident took place when the duo was waiting for food and Maan was purchasing a cigarette from a nearby kiosk. Suddenly, five to six men arrived at the spot and whipped out their firearms and opened fire , said police.

Maan and the kiosk owner suffered bullets injuries while Digvijay fled. Maan tried to escape but was chased on foot for almost ten meters by the assailants, while they continued firing at him. As Maan collapsed on the road, the assailants fled in a car that was parked a few metres away from the dhaba, locals told police.

Panic gripped the residents and shopkeeper­s in the neighbourh­ood after the shooting.
