EVEN COPS NOT SAFE Police confirmed the theft but denied it was the work of the professional gang that operates in Delhincr

NEW DELHI : Former Delhi police commissioner BK Gupta on Saturday became a victim of theft, allegedly committed by the ‘thak thak’ gangs that operate on the roads of Delhi and other NCR cities.

The former top cop on Saturday reported the theft of his bag containing ₹ 20,000 and an ipad. Police confirmed the incident but denied it was the work of the professional ‘thak thak’ gang.

A day before Gupta lost his bag, the ‘thak-thak’ gang had struck in the same area and stole a man’s bag. Two bikers distracted a man at Rajpur road in Civil Lines by telling him that his car had a flat tyre.

The two bikers fled with his bag containing ₹30,000 when the victim was changing his tyre.

The thak thak gangs distract car drivers by either knocking on the car windows or puncturing their tyres. The gang derives its name from a tapping sound, ‘thak thak’, they make on the car’s windows to knock and distract the driver.

While the driver is distracted, other gang members flee with valuables kept in the car. Minor boys are frequently used to carry out such thefts.

Police said the latest incident took place near Majnu Ka Tila in north Delhi on Saturday morning, when Gupta and his friends were transporting luggage from one car to another. The two cars were parked on the road.

Gupta, who called the police control room the about the theft, told the police that he was going to Chandigarh when the incident happened.

Deputy commissioner of police (north) Jatin Narwal confirmed that Gupta lost his bag- gage but denied that the former police chief was a victim of the thak -thak gangs.

“The car’s door was unlocked. The thieves opened the door and fled with the bag. We have registered a case and are probing it.”

Hindustan Times contacted Gupta who did not wish to comment on the case.

Investigating officials said they were questioning the suspects. Police have not found any CCTV footage to identify the suspects.
