SHO booked for molesting woman journalist
NEW DELHI: The Delhi police on Monday registered an FIR against an inspector for allegedly molesting a woman journalist. The woman, who works with an English daily, had accused the inspector of allegedly touching her inappropriately on Friday, when police baton-charged JNU students at Sarojini Nagar.
The accused inspector, who was posted as a station house officer at a west Delhi police station, has also been transferred to the district lines (punishment posting) and the crime branch has been tasked to probe the case.
The woman journalist had filed a complaint at the Sarojini Nagar police station on Friday night.
Police had ordered a vigilance inquiry to probe the woman’s allegations. Madhur Verma, Delhi police spokesperson said, “Based on the findings of vigilance enquiry, a case under section 354 A Ipc(sexual harassment) has been registered on the complaint of alleged molestation given by the lady journalist pertaining to the incident of crowd dispersal.”
Verma said that the officer was transferred to ensure a fair probe.
On Monday morning, a group of journalists met union home minister Rajnath Singh demanding an FIR against the inspector and other police officials for manhandling journalists on Friday. A photojournalist with the Hindustan Times was also roughed up and her camera snatched by women police officers. Police recovered the camera on Sunday and have suspended two police constables.
On Friday, police batoncharged JNU students, who were marching to Parliament to protest against the university administration for not suspending a professor accused of molestation. Police have said they resorted to lathicharge because some protesters attacked police officers.
Also on Monday, members of the JNU students union filed a complaint at the Sarojini Nagar police station against the alleged excessive force by the police during the march.
