NEW DELHI: Two men allegedly stabbed a 26-year-old woman to death at a weekly market in south Delhi’s Govindpuri on Wednesday night after her husband asked them not to stand ‘too close’ to her, police said.

The suspects, Ajay (23) and Bijender (24), were arrested after the public caught them on the spot and beat them up. Their last names were not available.

Deputy commissioner of police (southeast) Chinmoy Biswal said: “The two men had a quarrel with the husband of the woman as they were standing inappropriately close to her. When the husband objected, they attacked him. The woman came in between and received a fatal stab wound on the chest,” said Biswal.

The woman, Suman Dubey (26), was a homemaker and lived in Sangam Vihar. Her husband, Umesh Dubey (32), took her to a hospital where she died during treatment, police said.

Biswal said a call was received regarding the incident at Govindpuri police station around 8.47pm on Wednesday.

Dubey said that they had gone to the weekly market to do some shopping for their four children – three daughters and one son – aged between 9 and 2 years. They were planning to go to their home town in Uttar Pradesh on Thursday. The children were with them when the crime took place.

“I was standing with the kids on one side, while my wife was shopping. Suddenly the two men came and one of them stood inappropriately close to her. I went to him and objected to it. My wife was carrying a purse, a mobile and wearing jewellery. The second man was standing a few steps ahead,” said Dubey.

An argument broke out after which the men went away and Dubey’s wife resumed shopping. After some time, when the family were about to leave the market, the two allegedly attacked them with a knife, Dubey said. “They attacked me and my wife. I somehow managed to save my children. I received minor injuries, but my wife was badly hurt. She was dead by the time I took her to the hospital,” said Dubey.

The DCP said the two accused were caught and beaten up by the public on the spot.

Ajay has no previous crime record. But Bijender was found to be previously involved in a theft case registered at the RK Puram police station.

A knife was allegedly recovered from their possession. NEW DELHI: A day after the Delhi Electricity Regulatory Commission (DERC) revised electricity tariffs in the national capital, power minister Satyendar Jain sought to allay fears of residents about a hike in power bills.

Jain, on Thursday, said the government would continue with the power subsidy for which a separate amount has already been allotted in the budget.

“Contrary to popular perception, the government provides a flat rebate of ₹2 per unit for consumption between 0-200 units and ₹2.975 per unit for consumptions in the bracket 201-400 instead of a 50% subsidy on the actual energy charges,” Jain said.
