NEWDELHI: The Delhi Commission for Women has launched ‘Rape Roko Mahila Adalats’ during which women and girls are encouraged to raise issues concerning their safety in presence of officers concerned, who will address them on the spots.

An official from the women’s panel said that the Mahila Adalats are attended by women and officials from the Delhi police and Delhi government.

“The Mahila Adalats are an attempt by the Commission to inculcate accountability in the system towards women and girls,” the official said.

The first Mahila Adalat was held at Mohan Garden, Uttam Nagar on Wednesday. The women’s commission is running a rape roko (stop rapes) campaign, seeking death penalty for people accused of raping minors.

“Over 500 women and girls participated in the Mahila Adalat and raised the issue of sale of illegal liquor and drugs, sexual harassment with school girls while going and coming from their schools and open drinking in parks,” the official said.

The official said that the women and girls alleged that illegal liquor was being sold in houses in E Block and Bindapur Pocket 4.

The official said that the police has assured action in the matter raised by the women.

During the adalat, two women also raised the issue of their children harassing them after which the women’s commission helped one woman in filing an FIR against her daughter for allegedly beating her.

“Through the Rape Roko movement, we strongly demand stringent action against child rapists in 6 months via strong law, increased police resources and accountability and fast track courts. We are now starting the Rape Roko Mahila Adalats to fix problems on the ground which promote sexual harassment,” Maliwal said.

She also asked people who wish to volunteer for the movement to give missed call at 9313 181 181.
