NEW DELHI: As they sat in their examination hall, waiting for the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) question papers to arrive, students of classes 10 and 12 in many schools on Monday wondered if there was another paper leak and if their exams were cancelled.

Exams at some government schools were late by 15 minutes to one hour due to alleged delay in receiving question papers. Some private schools said they faced a delay of 10-15 minutes and that did not pose a problem for them.

Monday was the first day of exams after the board announced on March 29 that at least two papers – economics of class 12 and mathematics of class 10 – might have been leaked.

“I was inside the classroom by 10 am but the question paper did not arrive even after the scheduled time. I was worried the question paper might have been leaked. But then an announcement was made that exam would start late,” said Amit Singh, a student of Government Sarvodaya Co-ed Vidyalaya, Rohini Sector-6.

Class 10 students had to write their Sanskrit/french/urdu Course B exam while Class 12 students were scheduled to take Hindi (elective and core)/gujarati/nepali/kashmiri exam.

Students said they were later informed by the teachers that the paper would be late due to security reasons. “We announced that paper would come late and students should not worry,” said the principal of a government school.

Students said they were relieved once they received the question paper. “It was a very easy paper and I could attempt all questions. Overall I am happy and the paper coming late did not affect my performance,” said Kajal, a class 10 student.

The board has announced a retest for economics paper on April 25. For the class 10 paper, the board has said if at all required, a re-test will be done only for Delhi-ncr areas.

“I actually got a little scared when they did not give us the papers on time. I thought even this must have gotten leaked. I got upset thinking there was no use sitting and studying all night, because there will be a retest and I will have to study again. But thankfully it was not so,” said Akash, a class 12 student.
