NEWDELHI: A 19-year-old Nepalese woman was murdered on Saturday allegedly by her live-in partner because he suspected her of having an affair with his friend and some other boys in their neighbourhood in northwest Delhi’s Shakurpur village, police said on Tuesday.

The live-in partner was, who had been absconding after the murder, was arrested on Monday from northeast Delhi’s Bhajanpura by a police team. The team received a tip-off about the suspect’s presence near Yamuna Vihar bus depot. A trap was laid and the suspect was caught, said AK Singla, deputy commissioner of police (northeast).

Singla said the arrested man, identified by his single name Imran alias Dadda, is a drug addict and a pickpocket. Around a year ago, Singla said, Imran came in contact with the woman from Nepal who worked at a nightclub in Netaji Subhash Place area in northwest Delhi.

“The two became friends and soon fell in love with each other. The woman then lived in a rented room with her elder sister in Shakurpur village and were separated from their family,” said the DCP.

Police said Imran lived in a rented room with his friend Sahil. The woman also moved in with Imran.

A few months ago, a police officer associated with the case said, Imran learnt that his live-in partner was cheating on him and she was having an affair with Sahil and some other boys in the neighbourhood. The couple started having arguments over the issue.

On Saturday evening, Imran was in the room with the woman and Sahil was away when they entered into a fight over her alleged affairs issue. “Imran turned violent and strangled her. He then hit her head two-three times with an iron rod to ensure she is dead. Her blood was scattered all over the room when the police team reached the crime scene after receiving a call about the murder,” said Singla.

Imran had fled the crime scene with his belongings. A murder case was registered at the Subhash Place police station. Imran had been hiding in northeast Delhi, said police.
