NEW DELHI: Three months after a 61-year-old man died due to injuries after he was attacked with baseball bats in south-west Delhi’s Baprola, four people were arrested on March 28 from Dwarka Sector 13 DDA park, police said on Wednesday. A group of men had allegedly assaulted Chandresh Ram on December 27, 2017, when he stopped them from creating a ruckus after consuming alcohol.

The arrested men include an automobile engineering diploma holder, Sandeep Sehrawat and Satish alias Deepak Pandit, brother of gangster Sandeep Kana police said. The other two were identified as Sanjeev Neeru and Chiranji Lal. Two persons, Jaswant and Manjeet Dabas, were arrested a day after the murder took place.

Bhisham Singh, deputy commissioner of police (crime), said that on December 27, arrested persons were celebrating the release of Sehrawat and Pandit from jail on bail at their office at Harphool Vihar in Baprola.

“They all consumed alcohol till late evening. After they were drunk, the six men began misbehaving with locals,” said DCP Singh. Annoyed over their alleged rowdy behaviour, Ram intervened. The men allegedly started assaulting Ram with their baseball bats and sticks. When Ram’s son came to his father’s rescue, he too was assaulted, said police. Ram was rushed to the hospital where he died.

Ram, his son and a few other people were injured in the attack. The attackers had fled.

A case of murder, attempt to murder, and hurt was registered at the Ranhola police station and two accused were arrested a day after the incident. The other four were evading arrest till they were caught last week.

Sehrawat’s interrogation revealed that after completing his diploma in automobile engineering from Pusa in 2007, he worked with a car manufacturing company in Gurgaon. During his service period, he came in contact with some gangsters from Najafgarh. Sehrawat quit the job and began the business of lending money at high interest rates. He started keeping illegal weapons and was arrested last year for possessing an illegal pistol, said the officer.
