NEWDELHI: Delhi Daredevils were dealt a severe blow after South Africa pacer Kagiso Rabada was ruled out of the IPL due to injury on Thursday. According to a Cricket South Africa (CSA) press release, scans after the fourth Test against Australia in Johannesburg have revealed a lower back stress reaction that will need three months to recover.

“Kagiso has been diagnosed with a lower back stress reaction which will rule him out of action for up to three months. He will need a month’s break from all physical activity before commencing rehabilitation to get him ready for the series against Sri Lanka in July,” team manager Mohammed Moosajee was quoted as saying.

This development three days before their opening game leaves Daredevils in a precarious situation as they are left with only Trent Boult as an overseas opening bowler. Mohammed Shami is the frontline Indian pacer in the squad but it remains to be seen how big a toll the recent charges of domestic violence filed by his wife has taken on Shami’s bowl- ing. Their spin options too don’t inspire awe as Amit Mishra and Jayant Yadav haven’t had a good domestic run to the IPL. But Delhi Daredevils captain Gautam Gambhir isn’t worried by it. “Both Jayant and Amit are experienced people. Amit knows how to take wickets while Shahbaz Nadeem has variations. Jayant too has done well in the opportunities he has got,” said Gambhir who said he would be ending his career with Delhi Daredevils.

“It is a fresh start. The moment we start winning games, people will start believing in us. Hopefully we can win the title this time. We have got the team that can win. I started with Delhi and it is always great to come back to a place where you started. Hopefully, I can finish my career here,” he said.
