Rain and thunderstorm likely on Wednesday: MET
NEWDELHI: Rain and thunderstorm are likely to hit Delhi on Wednesday, officials of the meteorological department said on Sunday.
This is likely to bring down the mercury level by a few notches. On Sunday the maximum temperature was 36.3 degrees Celsius, which was two degrees above normal. The minimum temperature stood at 23 degree Celsius, which was three degrees above normal.
“A western disturbance is approaching. Delhi would be able to feel its effect from Tuesday night. We are expecting some rain and thunderstorms on Wednesday,” said Kuldeep Srivastava, senior scientist with the regional weather forecasting cen- tre in New Delhi.
The western disturbance is likely to hit Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and northern parts of Punjab on Sunday. On Monday it would extend to other parts of northwest India including Haryana, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh.
“The sky over Delhi would start turning cloudy from Tuesday night. There could be a dust storm or thunderstorm. Rain is likely to hit Delhi on Wednesday,” he added.
Even though western disturbances are known to trigger rain during the winter over northwest India, they usually trigger thunderstorm and dust storm during March and April. In some cases they trigger rain.
A dust storm, with wind speed equivalent to that of a ‘severe cyclonic storm’ lashed Delhi on Friday afternoon, followed by a thunderstorm and rain. The wind speed of the dust storm reached 98km per hour around 5:50 pm on Friday disrupting flight schedules, Metro services and power supply.
