NEWDELHI: The Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) administration has appealed to the protesting students to not block entry and exit to school buildings as it is against the interest of students.

A section of students and teachers have been protesting against various issues, including compulsory attendance that made 75% attendance as the minimum requirement to sit for exams and avail scholarships.

Another major issue is demand for action against a professor accused of sexual harassment by a group of current and former students.

“As a leading university, JNU needs to complete all the academic programmes in time and as per the university academic cal- endar. While the students have the right to stage peaceful protest, we urge the students to not block entry and exit of students, faculty and staff into the school/centre buildings,” a statement released by the administration said.

The statement said it was also endorsed by the deans of schools and chairperson of special centers. The university, however, refused to give details of how many deans and chairpersons have endorsed the statement.

“The application of current students, several financial requests, and other official communications are not being processed from locked schools and centers. We request the student community to bring normalcy in the campus so that many issues can be discussed at various levels,” the statement said.
