THE INITIATIVE WILL BE IMPLEMENTED FROM JULY 22. THERE ARE 45 SCHOOLS IN NDMC’S JURISDICTION AND ALL HAVE PROVISIONS FOR INTERACTIVE BOARDS

NEWDELHI: The New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) on Tuesday launched a project to start smart classes in 28 senior secondary schools in which each student of a selected class will get a tablet computer.

The initiative will be implemented from July 22. The step comes after a pilot project in November at two NDMC schools -- N.P. Bengali Girls Senior Secondary School and N.P. Girls Senior Secondary School at Gole Market -- received a positive response..

“The pilot project yielded very good results and this motivated us to go ahead with the project. All 28 schools will get internet connectivity, tablets and smart boards. The project will facilitate about 11,000 students and over 150 teachers from Class VI to XII, and 11 teachers,” said Chanchal Yadav, secretary, NDMC,

The civic agency will implement the project in association with a non-government organisation (NGO) -- Khan Academy India. The NDMC signed a memorandum of understanding with the NGO on Tuesday.

“To begin with, under the project, teachers will assign quizzes and unit tests to students on tablets. During the test, students will have a choice to access the interactive study material provided on tablets by NGO. At the same time teachers can see their performance on a real-time basis and provide adequate assistance,” said an NDMC official familiar with the project.

“The tablets, provided to each student in class, will not just help in assigning tasks and evaluating performance but help teachers to identify individual student learning needs. It will help them assess each student’s progress real-time and without any manual evaluation,” he said.

There are 45 schools in NDMC’S jurisdiction and all have provisions for interactive boards. “But we want to take the concept of digital learning ahead and that’s why decided to take the project at a wider level,” said an NDMC official.
