GHAZIABAD: The body of a 24-yearold woman from Greater Noida was found bundled inside a suitcase at Kanawani near Indirapuram in Ghaziabad on Tuesday afternoon. Mala’s family, after identification of her body on Wednesday, said that she was four months pregnant and had a love marriage last November.

The body was recovered by the police after local residents informed them that a big suitcase was lying abandoned and the foot of a woman could be seen from the opening on one side of the suitcase.

“After the information was flashed to neighbouring police stations, her family arrived and identified the body. The postmortem reports will conclude whether the victim was pregnant. She seemed to be strangled,” said Arvind Sharma, police post in charge, Kanawani.

Mala’s parents stay at Vijay Nagar. She was married to Shivam Thakur, a salesman at a

mall in Noida. She was staying at Tigri, Greater Noida, along with husband.

Mala and Shivam befriended each other on Facebook and fell in love. They married in a Ghaziabad court in 2016. However, they stayed at their respective homes till the information about the court marriage came out.

“We arranged their marriage, which was performed in November 2017. Since then, they had been staying alone at their Tigri house. Mala’s friends told us that she was upset because her husband often told her to bring money from her parents,” said Saurav Gupta, Mala’s nephew.

“On Saturday, around 10pm, we got a call from her husband that she has fled with someone and taken along her suitcase, clothes and jewellery. She was four months pregnant,” said Gupta.

“After we reached Kanawani upon information of an unidentified body, we found it was her. Her hands and legs were tied and the body had been bundled inside the suitcase. There were no clothes or jewellery inside the suitcase. It was the same suitcase which we gifted her on her marriage. We suspect that her husband, along with his relatives, has murdered her as he was demanding money from us after the marriage,” Gupta said.

Ghaziabad police said the postmortem was conducted on Wednesday afternoon.

“We have received a formal complaint from the parents of the woman and they have lodged a case of dowry against her husband and in-laws. We are yet to make any arrests in the case and investigating the matter,” said Akhilesh Tripathi, station house officer, Bisrakh police station.

The victim was the only daughter of her parents and has two elder brothers. She completed her postgraduation in commerce and was giving tuitions at home, but gave up teaching after she got married.
