NEWDELHI: The Delhi government launched its ‘Mission Buniyaad’ scheme on Wednesday to improve the language and mathematics skills of its 3-9 graders.

The mission aims to ensure that in the next academic session, there are no Neo-nishtha or Nishtha sections in any of the schools. These were names given to the sections of “non-readers” identified during the Chunauti mission, which targeted students of Classes 6 to 9. It ran through the academic schedule.

The new project, Buniyaad, also works on the lines of Chunauti, but targets the learning deficits in Classes 3 to 8, and will run from April 2 to June 30, in two phases. In the first phase, until May 10, it would be part of the regular school schedule, and in the second phase, it would be merged with the summer camp.

Buniyaad will target 76,000 Class 3 to 5 students in the Sarvodaya schools and all Class 6 to 9 students of the government schools, whose language and math skills are below par.

The scheme was launched by education minister Manish Sisodia at Thyagaraj Stadium. He spoke of how if a student is unable to read or write, it is not his failure rather a reflection of the failure of the education system.

“A student (who is in Class 6) has spent five years studying in some school with some teacher somewhere. If in those five years, they can’t read their textbooks properly... that means that there is something wrong in our methods,” he said.
