NEW DELHI: A 39-year-old Delhi Police constable died in a road accident in west Delhi’s Hari Nagar on Tuesday night. He was returning home on his motorcycle after duty.

Police said the exact cause of the accident could not ascertained till Wednesday evening. They suspect that the constable’s bike either slipped on the road and his head hit a road divider or he was hit by an unknown vehicle.

“There were skid marks on the road. The constable had suffered severe head injuries,” a senior police officer said, adding that they were analysing footage of CCTV cameras installed nearby to ascertain the cause of the accident.

The constable, Hari Singh Meena, lived with his family in Mohan Garden near Uttam Nagar in west Delhi. He originally belonged to Rajasthan. Meena was posted in head assistant character roll (HACR) branch in northwest district police.

The officer said Meena was deployed in Mukherjee Nagar area as part of the law and arrangement for strike called on Tuesday by groups opposing caste-based reservations.

“After completing the duty, Meena was riding back home when the accident took place. He was in civil clothes. Some passersby saw him injured and rushed him to a nearby hospital where he died,” said Vijay Singh, deputy commissioner of police (west).

Meena had joined the force in 2004. He is survived by his wife and two daughters.
