Illegal structures around Mehrauli park removed
NEW DELHI: The Delhi government on Thursday removed encroachments in and around Mehrauli Archaeological Park, revenue officials said.
Thursday’s drive came nearly a month after the government had conducted the biggest ever demolition drive in south Delhi’s Asola village. Sources stated that the revenue department bulldozers demolished nearly a dozen structures around the Asi-protected monuments in Mehrauli.
Officials said the action was taken in Ladda Sarai village and Lado Sarai on the direction of the Supreme Court-appointed monitoring committee which is monitoring removal of all unauthorised occupation on government land.
Nurseries dotting the roads leading to the Mehrauli Archaeological Park and Qutab Minar, and those on Chhatarpur village border leading to Ladda Sarai chowk were removed on Thursday. Unauthorised constructions in the form of jhuggis that were built over the past few decades were also demolished and the area in front of Qutub Minar metro station was cleared.
According to officials, four earthmovers, 100 civil defence volunteers and a battery of police personnel took part in the demolition drive that started in the morning and was over by 2pm. “The drive went smoothly with revenue officials of the south district and teams of Delhi Disaster Management Authority, DDA, Delhi police and discom BSES keeping a watch,” a revenue official said.
