NEWDELHI: A 22-year-old man was killed after a speeding cluster bus hit and dragged him for more than 200 metres on the road in east Delhi’s Indraprastha Extension on Saturday evening.

The horrific accident was captured on a CCTV camera installed at the gate of a residential society near the accident spot. In the CCTV footage, the accident victim is seen trying to cross the road as he is hit and then dragged by the orange cluster bus. The footage shows a few men trying to signal the bus driver to stop. Locals told the police that the bus driver did not stop the vehicle and continued to drag the victim.

“The man was dragged for almost 200 metres. The bus driver tried to flee with the bus. But some locals caught him and handed him over to the police,” said Pankaj Singh, deputy commissioner of police (east).

A case of rash and negligent driving causing death was registered at the Madhu Vihar police station. The driver was identified as Sukhpal Singh, 49, a resident of Mandoli in Delhi.

A police officer identified the victim as 22-year-old Sonu Chaudhary from Uttar Pradesh’s Mathura who had come to Delhi to take admission in a college.

On Saturday around 2pm, Chaudhary was crossing the road at Narvana Road intersection with a friend when the accident took place. In the footage, Chaud- hary is seen being thrown on the road ahead of the bus due to the impact, and then he comes under the front left wheel of the bus. “His body was stuck between the wheel and the body of the bus,” said the officer.

According to the officer, Chaudhary’s friend rushed him to a hospital where doctors declared him brought dead. “The friend disappeared from the hospital. We are trying to identify and locate him as he is the prime witness,” the officer said.
