Joshna Chinappa posts first ever win over Nicol David

CHENNAI: Joshna Chinappa beat former world number one Nicol David 11-8, 11-8, 11-8 in the second round of the El Gouna Internatio­nal squash tournament in El Gouna (Egypt) for her first ever win over the legendary Malaysian. “I knew I had a tough first round, then Nicol in the pre-quarters, so I had no pressure and I just wanted to play freely and enjoy myself,” Joshna was quoted as saying about her win on the PSA World Tour website.

LAHIRI SLIPS

SAN ANTONIO (US): Anirban Lahiri slipped to tied 66th in the third round of the Valero Texas Open. Lahiri, playing his third PGA Tour, shot 1-over 73 in the third round and was lying T-66 as compared to T-48 after the second round.

ADITI TIED 9TH

LOSANGELES: Aditi Ashok’s superb charge on the back nine with two birdies and an eagle 2 on a Par-4 at the HUGEL-JTBC Los Angeles Open helped her card 2-under 69 to move to T-9 after the third round.

FOUR GOLD IN JUDO

LALITPUR (NEPAL): India won four gold medals on the opening day of the 8th South Asian Judo Championsh­ip. L. Sushila Devi (48 kg), Kalpana Devi Thoudam (52 kg), A Anita Chanu (57 kg) and H Sunibala Devi (63kg) won in respective categories. India’s men bagged two bronze medals.

ROHTAK: Mandeep Jangra thumped Haerheng Wulepaer of China Dragons to register his first ever win in the World Series of Boxing format and guided the India Tigers to a 4-1 score, here at the National Boxing Academy. Earlier, Mohammad Etash Khan walloped Boxiang Zhu by unanimous decision to hand the Tigers an unassailab­le 3-1 lead. RESULTS: 46-49 kg: Shyam Kumar Kakara lost to Zhonglin Wu – 1:2; 56 kg: Mohd. Etash Khan bt Boxiang Zu – 3:0; 64 kg: Rohit Tokas bt Shengze Qi – Walkover; 75 kg: Mandeep Jangra bt Haerheng Wulepaer – 3:0.

JUNIOR HOCKEY

NEW DELHI: Hockey Karnataka beat Hockey Madhya Bharat 5-3 on Day 2 of the 8th Hockey India Junior Men National Championsh­ip (B Division). In other matches, Hockey Coorg beat Hockey Andhra Pradesh 5-2, Bengal Hockey Associatio­n beat Hockey Jammu & Kashmir 8-0, Bengaluru Hockey Associatio­n defeat Hockey Puducherry 4-1 and Assam Hockey played out a 2-2 draw with Sports Authority of Gujarat – Hockey Academy.

SSB CHAMPIONS

NEWDELHI: SSB clinched the overall champion trophy of the 2nd All India Police Judo Cluster Championsh­ip. In gymnastics, BSF & CISF won while SSB were runners-up. SSB’S Kapil was declared all-round best in gymnastic championsh­ip. The wushu championsh­ip for men was won by SSB and Rajasthan were runners-up. In women’s category, SSB were the number one team and CRPF were second.

The judo championsh­ip was won by Punjab while SSB were runners-up in the men’s category. In women’s category, SSB won and CRPF were runners-up. In men’s taekwondo championsh­ip, SSB won and CRPF were runners-up. In the women’s category, SSB won and CRPF were runners-up.
