Attack on doc over ₹ 100cr plot?

NEW DELHI : The ‘secret’ sale of a six-acre plot of land holding a market value of ₹100 crore but allegedly sold for just ₹9 crore is at the centre of the probe in the murderous assault on an orthopaedic surgeon at his south Delhi farmhouse on Saturday night.

The 65-year-old doctor, Hans U Nagar, received three bullet wounds in the attack, but is stable and has been able to interact with the investigators. He has accused his two brothers, Ron and John, and four others of masterminding the attack, said Romil Baaniya, deputy commissioner of police (south).

Nagar told the police that his brothers and the four other suspects repeatedly threatened him and made videos of him and his farmhouse where the attack took place. He alleged that two of the four attackers were men who had recorded his video and threatened him over the last month and a half.

Apart from a large farmhouse in Fatehpur Beri, where he was shot at, Nagar and his family own several houses and properties in Delhi and Gurugram. It was the six-acre land in Gurugram’s Behrampur that was a bone of contention between him and his brothers.

In his statement to the police, Nagar alleged that the market price of the Behrampur property was ₹100 crore, but his brother John and his two associates, Nasir Khan and Dinesh Jajoo, sold it to a private firm for only ₹9 crore around seven months ago. and that he had managed it all,” said Nagar in his statement in Hindi, a copy of which has been accessed by HT.

Nagar was returning to his farmhouse around 11.30 pm on Saturday when he was attacked moments after he dropped his maid at the servants’ quarters outside his farmhouse.

“I was near my farmhouse gate in my white Renault Kwid car when I noticed three men approaching with guns. One of them was the man who had earlier threatened me outside the police station. The other man was the one recording my video at the coffee shop and the wedding,” alleged Nagar.

Nagar was hit twice in his abdomen soon after the attackers began shooting at him. “I took out my licenced pistol to fire at the attackers from inside the car itself. I fired many rounds and believe the two men were hit in their shoulders,” said Nagar.

When the firing from the other end did not cease, Nagar came out of his car and continued firing on the attackers, forcing them to flee. Nagar was hit a third time, but he had fired a total of 13 rounds at the attackers. His car bore 16 bullets marks.

Over the next few minutes, Nagar hid in the bushes at his farmhouse before dialling the police. It was only when his daughter Emmie Nagar arrived on hearing the gunshots that he was rushed to a hospital.

Nagar is the son to an army brigadier and a German mother. He went on to marry a German himself and has four children with her.

Two of their sons are settled abroad. On his statement, his brothers and the four others are being questioned by the police, but the DCP said it was too early to say whether or not any of them were actually involved in the crime.

“The investigation will take a while because of the long-drawn civil cases they were embroiled in. We have alerted hospitals in Delhi and nearby regions, but haven’t received any news about the two suspects believed to be hit by Nagar’s bullets,” said the deputy commissioner of police.
