BARCELONA: While Barcelona rubber-stamped a decade of domestic dominance by clinching the La Liga title on Sunday in dramatic circumstances, there is an inescapable feeling that their feats have been upstaged by Real Madrid’s continued success in Europe.

Barca beat Deportivo La Coruna 4-2 in a thrilling game with a hat-trick from Lionel Messi to claim a seventh La Liga title in the last 10 years, which also sealed a fourth league and Cup double in the same period.

Yet Real’s achievements in the Champions League, where the Catalans have exited at the quarter-final stage in the last three seasons, have forced Barca to cede the limelight to their arch-rivals. Although Barcelona, still unbeaten in the league, wrapped up the title with a remarkable 11-point advantage over Atletico Madrid and 15-point lead over last year’s champions Real, their season has been overshadowed by their dramatic Champions League exit.

The Catalans were beaten by AS Roma in the quarter-finals after throwing away a 4-1 advantage from the first leg.

Coach Ernesto Valverde continues to be dogged by questions about the woeful 3-0 loss in Rome and was asked if it had damaged his position at the club even on the eve of the title-clinching game against Deportivo. In the aftermath of Barca’s elimination, voices in the Catalan press asked why Valverde had not rotated his squad more in league games to keep the players fresher for European nights, an art Real coach Zinedine Zidane has mastered.

That painful European exit will feel even sorer should Madrid win their semi-final against Bayern Munich and go on to lift the European Cup for a third successive season, especially considering how badly they have performed in the league.

“Barcelona cannot boast of the double as it could be accompanied, if not eclipsed by Real Madrid getting to the final,” said an article in Catalan newspaper Sport on Sunday.

“That is why Barca are living their own triumphs with a low profile, without passion, well aware that the tough elimination to Roma caused irreparable damage.”

Valverde believes his side deserve more recognition for the manner in which they have stormed to the title with four games remaining, especially as the previous four were decided either on the final or penultimate weekend of the campaign.

“When you win it everything seems so simple. But there are many games behind it, many months and we have been chasing it for so long and we’ve been the top of the league since day one,” Valverde said on Saturday.

“We need to take a breath and realise what we’ve achieved. The last few league titles were not won by big margins. I never thought we’d be this far ahead, I thought it would be a lot closer.”

NO GUARD OF HONOUR

Real Madrid will not give La Liga title winners Barcelona a guard of honour when they meet in El Clasico on Sunday, according to captain Sergio Ramos.

Barca wrapped things up in La Liga with a 4-2 win over Deportivo La Coruna.

Deportivo gave Barca a guard of honour for their Copa del Rey triumph, while they would normally expect to receive one in their next game after winning the league title.

That game happens to be against Madrid at Camp Nou, but Ramos has no doubt that Zinedine Zidane’s men will not be applauding their bitter rivals on to the pitch as they bid to end the Catalan side’s unbeaten run.

“What Zidane says is gospel,” Ramos said. “We’re making too much fuss out of all this.

“Barca have the title, which is what they wanted, but there will be no guard of honour full stop.

“They want to enjoy their title and the same for us and ours, we need to eliminate the Germans (Bayern Munich in the Champions League) and to reach another final.” Won Drawn

Lionel Messi Lionel Messi Luis Suarez Luis Suarez Jordi Alba Already four points ahead of Atletico Madrid, Barcelona hosted Las Palmas on a day when political tensions were at their highest following an illegal independence referendum in Catalonia. Barca staged the fixture behind closed doors as a 3-0 win maintained the leadership, while striking an early chord for team unity. On a strong winning run after seven victories in seven, Barca drew away to Atletico Madrid. Luis Suarez equalised in the 82nd minute to avoid defeat, and a potentially momentum-swinging win for Diego Simeone's men. Heading into Christmas, Barca visited Real for the first 'clasico' of the season, with the hosts desperate to kickstart their stuttering campaign. Instead, Barca inflicted a knock-out blow. After suffering their first defeat of the season against Espanyol in the Copa del Rey, Barca returned to face their local rivals in the league. Gerard Moreno put the home side in front only for a late header from Gerard Pique to secure a draw. Unexpected slips from Barca against Getafe and Las Palmas had given hope to Atletico, who arrived on the back of an eight-match winning run. But Barca moved 11 points clear as a bending Messi free-kick took the wind out of Atletico's sails. CORUNA,SPAIN: Barcelona forward Lionel Messi said his side was superior to every team in the league after he scored a hat-trick in Sunday’s 4-2 win at Deportivo which clinched the club’s 25th Spanish title with four games left in the season.

“I’m very happy, we feel so much joy after winning this league. We know how complicated it is to win the league, which is why we have to cherish this and celebrate it as we should with all our fans,” the Argentine told Barcelona’s television channel.

Ernesto Valverde’s side have 86 points after 34 games, 11 more than second-placed Atletico Madrid and 15 more than archrivals Real Madrid who are third in the standings.

La Liga’s top scorer praised his side for remaining unbeaten in the league although he lamented the one black mark of their campaign, their elimination from Champions League after losing a quarters second leg to AS Roma.

“We were superior to all our rivals and we haven’t lost a single game. We only lost once in the Cup (against Espanyol) and in Roma where we had a very unexpected result,” Messi added.

“You always deserve a lot of credit when you win a league and to do so without losing a game is very difficult. It was a very special league win because we didn’t lose a game. We had some tough moments and we overcame them without losing and that’s incredible.”

Defender Jordi Alba praised coach Valverde for guiding Barca back to the title in his first season in charge and hit out at the people who had fiercely criticised the manager after the defeat by Roma. “It’s a disgrace (the criticism) and the players need to stand up and admit that we all make mistakes. Valverde deserves this more than anyone,” Alba told reporters.
