IN GURUGRAM Hospital denies allegation, claims woman delivered in labour room

GURUGRAM: The staff of Gurugram civil hospital on Tuesday claimed that a pregnant woman was forced to give birth inside the toilet after she was not attended to by a doctor. The incident comes barely a month after a six-month pregnant woman delivered in the toilet of the same hospital.

Hospital authorities, however, denied the allegations.

Two other babies also supposedly died at the hospital on Tuesday due to lack of monitoring and care by the hospital staff.

Sources said the woman went to the toilet and delivered there after waiting for a doctor to attend to her for a long time.

According to a nurse in the hospital, 28-year-old Fujo Kumari, a resident of Gurugram’s Sector 86, was forced to give birth to a baby boy in the hospital’s toilet without any medical assistance as no doctor was available. The nurse claimed that Fujo had arrived at the hospital early on Tuesday morning and had been waiting for her turn to be admitted to the labour room.

Gurugram civil hospital authorities later said that Fujo and her baby were doing alright while denying that the woman had given birth inside a toilet.

“The delivery did not happen inside the toilet. The woman was at the door of the toilet and she was immediately taken to the labor room. Both mother and the baby are doing fine. There was also no negligence in two other baby deaths that were reported. Gynaecologists conducted about eight deliveries since the morning,” said principal medical officer Pradeep Sharma.

In the other incident, a nurse in the labour room on Tuesday said that 20-year-old Phoolo Devi’s baby died due to lack of monitoring by doctors. A resident of Mohammadpur village,

Phoolo had reached the hospital at 8:15am on Tuesday and was admitted soon after. However, the doctor who was supposed to check her was busy in the operation theatre.

“The doctor who was supposed to monitor her had five emergency operations that day, which is why she couldn’t check on Phoolo Devi and her baby died in the womb.” said the nurse.

In the second incident, 20-yearold Gunjan’s baby allegedly died during delivery.

According to staffers in the labour room, the baby died because of breech birth and could have been saved if the operation was done on time. Gunjan was also referred to the same doctor who was supposed to monitor Phoolo Devi .

Ajay Gupta, Secretary of the Indian Medical Association Gurugram, said the incident is very unfortunate and the government should look into it.

“Suspending doctors will not solve anything. The cause behind these cases need to be investigated.”
