NEW DELHI: The Delhi Police has arrested a 29-year-old man for allegedly murdering an elderly woman, his former neighbour, in south Delhi’s Gulmohar Enclave last month.

Police zeroed in on the suspect after they found that a minor injury on his hand had been inflicted by the same knife he had allegedly used to kill the woman.

Police said the man chose to rob the elderly woman because he wanted contribute financially to a relative’s wedding in Muzaffarpur, .

The suspect, Sunny Thakur, a resident of Badarpur and a native of Muzaffarpur in Bihar, lived in the same neighbourhood for 15 years. Police said Thakur’s father had been taking care of small constructions in the DDA flats in the neighbourhood for the last 32 years.

The woman, 67-year-old Usha Kumar, was found on the floor, her body soaked in blood with multiple injuries on her throat and head on April 23.

Deputy Commissioner of Police, south, Romil Baaniya said the scene of crime indicated there was a scuffle. All the cupboards and drawers in all the rooms and the kitchen were open and their articles were scattered on the floor.

“Thakur was among the people in the crowd who had expressed concerns about the murder on the very first day. Amid the probe, when CCTV footages of various entry and exit gates of the residential colony were examined, a number of suspects were rounded up. Thakur was spotted on CCTV leaving the colony with a gunny bag and was detained for questioning,” Baaniya said.

Police spotted an injury mark on Thakur’s arm. “He said the injury was due to an iron water pipe and he had visited a doctor on Sunday to get it treated. But medical examination showed it was a knife cut. The doctor whom Thakur visited also said he had gone for treatment on Monday, the day of murder, and not on Sunday,” the DCP said.

During interrogation, he broke down and admitted the crime, the officer said. “He had planned to rob jewellery and valuables to contribute for his relative’s wedding in Muzaffarpur, Bihar. He smothered and strangled her with a rope and bludgeoned her with dumbbells. Later he slit her throat with a kitchen knife,” Baaniya said.
