Shahzar claims No 1 spot in air pistol rankings
NEWDELHI: Shooter Shahzar Rizvi on Tuesday grabbed the No 1 spot in world rankings, riding on his silver medal-winning performance in the World Cup in Changwon. With 1654 rating points, Rizvi shot to the top spot ahead of Russia’s Artem Chernousov (1046). The other pistol shooter in the top-10 is Jitu Rai, placed sixth.
Rizvi had earlier won gold with a world record score at the World Cup in Guadalajara in March.
Amongwomen,manubhaker, who won gold at the Commonwealth Games, was the only Indian in the top-10 of the air pistol rankings at fourth spot.
STRONG BOXING TEAM
NEWDELHI: India will field 16 boxers at the AIBA Youth World Championships in August, where they will get another shot at qualification for the Youth Olympics in October. A total of 10 women and six men have made the cut for the championships in Hungary, the Boxing Federation of India said in a statement.
The challenge in women’s section will be spearheaded by world champions Nitu (48 kg) and Sakshi (57kg) and national champion Jony (60kg). Accompanying them will be world bronze-medallist Neha Yadav (+81 kg), Manisha (64 kg) and Lalita (69 kg) along with Anamika (51kg), Astha Pahwa (75kg) and Sakshi Gaidhani (81kg) and bronze medal winner Divya Pawar (54kg).
The championship will be the last opportunity to qualify for the Youth Olympics.
4-NATION FOOTBALL
NEWDELHI: The India U-16 football team will compete in a four-nation tournament in Serbia from May 9-13, as part of preparations for the AFC U-16 Finals in Malaysia. India will face Jordan, Tajikistan and Serbia in the four-nation tournament during the trip.
This comes less than a month after the Indian U-16 national team played the USA and Norway. The Indian boys had earlier played in Qatar, Hong Kong and Spain.
SWIMMER COMMITS SUICIDE
HOOGHLY(WESTBENGAL): Moupriya Mitra, a 16-year-old National level swimmer, allegedly committed suicide at her residence in Hooghly. The 10th-grade student reportedly hung herself on Monday. The police recovered her body and sent it to Chinsura Imambara Hospital for an autopsy. No suicide note was found from the swimmer’s residence.
TEAM ANNOUNCED
NEWDELHI: India will field a young but strong golf team at the 2018 Asian Games in Jakarta this August. The four-member boys team and three-member girls team was chosen after a sixround trial that concluded on Monday. Sifat Sagoo, Ridhima Dilawari and Diksha Dagar were top three among girls, while Kshitij Naved Kaul, Aadil Bedi and Harimohan Singh were the top three among boys. World No 17 Rayhan Thomas, while being an amateur, was given a discretionary spot on the basis of world rankings.
