NEWDELHI: A 24-year-old man was allegedly stabbed to death by five men in Dakshinpuri in the early hours of Wednesday. Police said five men had murdered the victim Mohit Rai following a drunken brawl over a financial dispute between him and one of the accused named Arvind. Police said Arvind had borrowed money from Rai’s brother.

Rai had recently finished his graduation and was going to apply for MBA admissions. Police said a little past midnight, the five men — Arvind, Himanshu, Rahul, Ankush and Badal — called him out of his house and allegedly stabbed him to death. All accused were known to Rai, police said. Rai’s younger sister, Neelam, said the attackers tricked Mohit into leaving the house at around 12.30am on the pretext of asking him to help them use a new camera.

“My brother was preparing to go to bed when Rahul and Himanshu came home and asked him to come with them. They said Arvind had bought a new DSLR camera and wanted my brother’s help with some adjustments,” said Neelam. Deputy commissioner of police (south) Romil Baaniya said after reaching the park, Rai learnt that his brother Kailash had lent some money to Arvind which the accused was unable to repay. “Kailash had kept Arvind’s mobile as a security deposit. The five men demanded from Mohit that he brings the mobile from home and return it to its real owner. When he refused, they attacked with knives and fled the spot,” said Baaniya.

Neelam said she did not know anything about the motive but said neither of her two elder brothers had ever picked up a fight with anyone. According to the police received a call around 12.30 am that a young man was stabbed in Dakshinpuri.

“A police team rushed Mohit to the AIIMS Trauma Centre where he was declared brought dead. We registered a case of murder and launched a manhunt for the accused. Arvind and Ankush have been arrested and efforts are on to arrest the other accused. It was also found that Arvind himself had sustained some injuries during the attacked,” said Baaniya.
