THE HOSPITAL WILL HAVE OPDS FOR MEDICINE, SURGERY, DENTAL, ENT, OPHTHALMOLOGY

NEWDELHI: To help meet the unusual rush of patients in government hospitals, the Union cabinet chaired by prime minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday approved the construction of a 100-bed hospital in Delhi.

The general hospital, which will come up at an estimated cost of R 95 crore, will be built in west Delhi’s Najafgarh in the next two years.

“There are about 73 villages around Najafgarh, which has a population of 13.65 lakh, but there is no good hospital around,” law minister Ravi Shankar Prasad said during a briefing soon after the cabinet meeting.

The proposed hospital will have specialised departments such as medicine, gynaecology and paediatric surgery, apart from a state-of-the-art blood bank and diagnostic services.

Parvesh Verma, west Delhi MP, said the project was first conceived 20 years ago and the previous government had almost decided to shelve it.

“The 20-years-old proposal for the hospital was about to be cancelled. I made efforts to revive the project. Construction may begin this year and it will be completed by 2020. The multi-speciality hospital will be equipped with all modern facilities and equip- ments. Once it is functional, the hospital will cater to about 73 villages and more than 100 colonies in the area,” he said.

The hospital will have separate out patient departments (OPDS) for general medicine, surgery, dental, ear nose throat, ophthalmology, audiometry and paediatric care, with a staff of more than 30 doctors and 40 nurses, apart from 50 allied and healthcare personnel.

Lack of adequate health facility was a long-standing issue for the local population, especially for the poor and vulnerable sections, including women and children.

The hospital will have dedicated child and maternal services, and trauma care services.

The Delhi government provides healthcare services to about two crore people in its 32 hospitals.

“Thirty to forty percent of these patients are from neighbouring states. This is true of any government hospital in Delhi, so this 100-bed facility will prove helpful,” said a doctor from Delhi government hospital, on condition of anonymity.
