NEW DELHI: Delhi’s Public Works Department (PWD) has started re-carpeting (resurfacing) work on a five-kilometre stretch of the Ring Road between All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) and Ashram intersection. PWD officials said the road had potholes on several points, slowing down traffic on the busy stretch.

The project was approved by the Delhi government’s Expenditure Finance Committee (EFC) in December and an amount of Rs 15 crore was set aside for this purpose. The work, which began around 15 days ago, will include re-laying of fresh layers of asphalt on the damaged road.

Ring Road is one of the most important arterial roads of the national capital. The stretch, where re-carpeting is being done, passes through several traffic jam prone areas such as South Extension, Moolchand, Andrews Ganj and Lajpat Nagar.

“We are hoping to finish work by the end of this month. We had started from near AIIMS on the Ring Road and are slowly moving towards Ashram. In re-carpeting, we lay two asphalt layers 40 mm and 50 mm thick each. Re-carpeting of service roads will also be done in this,” chief engineer (maintenance), south division, Veer Sain said.

“To ensure that commuters are not inconvenienced, we are working during the night, lane wise,” a PWD official. The work was scheduled to be started by February end but it got delayed due to tenders, the official said.
