Bhullar loses playoff at Korea event
SEONGNAM, KOREA: South Korean golfer Park Sang-hyun on Sunday clinched victory at the Asian Tour’s GS Caltex Maekyung Open for the second time after beating compatriot Chang Yi-keun in a nail-biting playoff.
Park went head-to-head with fellow South Koreans Chang and Hwang Jung-gon, together with India’s Gaganjeet Bhullar, after all four closed the final round at a one-under-par 283. Bhullar fell with a bogey at the first playoff hole before world number 141 Hwang was eliminated on the second with a poorly-played putt -- leaving Park and Chang with a final showdown at 18th fairway.
ADITI TAKES LEAD
THE COLONY, USA: Aditi Ashok did her bit by firing a five-under 66 to take the clubhouse lead in the truncated Texas Classic on Sunday, reduced to 36 holes due to inclement weather. If she were to win, the 20-year-old from Bangalore will be the first Indian to do so on the Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA). Ahead by a shot at seven-under 135, it will be an anxious wait for Aditi as South Koreans Jenny Shin and Sung Hyun Park were to tee off later in the day.
HOCKEY PUNJAB WIN
BANGALORE: Hockey Punjab defeated Hockey Haryana 4-2 in the final of the Hockey India Junior Men’s National Championship 2018 A Division. Hockey Gangpur-odisha beat Hockey Odisha 6-1 to bag bronze medal.
JAIPUR SIBLINGS WIN
BANGALORE: Fardeen Qamar and Farhat Aleen Qamar, t he brother and sister from Jaipur, won the U-18 Roland Garros series event.
Fardeen won the boys event with a commanding 6-1, 6-0 win over Delhi’s Ayush Deshwal while Farhat came from behind to beat Sharanya Gaware and claim girls title.
KADHE RUNNER UP
NEW DELHI: India’s Arjun Kadhe ended runners up at ITF Futures event in Abuja, Nigeria after losing the final in straight sets to Brazil’s Joao Menezes. Kadhe lost 3-6, 1-6 .
IRFAN FAILS TO QUALIFY
NEW DELHI: National 20km walk champion, KT Irfan, and compa- triots failed in their bid for Asian Games qualification after faring badly in the IAAF World Race Walking Team Championships at Ticang, China on Sunday.
Irfan clocked One hour, 29 minutes, 12 seconds to finish 49th, coming nowhere near the qualifying mark of 1:22.00 announced last week by the Athletics Federation of India for the August-september Jakarta Games. Vikas Singh (1:31.50-64th) and Neeraj Singh (1:32.56-71st) were the other two in the fray. India were 14th in the team championship.
OSTAPENKO, VENUS OUT
MADRID: French Open champion Jelena Ostapenko’s preparations in the run-up to the claycourt major hit the skids in the first round of the Madrid Open on Saturday as she was beaten 6-3, 6-3 by unseeded Romanian Irina-camelia Begu.
The Latvian has failed to scale the same heights she reached last year when she emerged out of nowhere to conquer Roland Garros.
Joining her at the exit was American Venus Williams, a runner-up in Madrid in 2010. She was beaten 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 by Estonian Anett Kontaveit.
