Jamia Millia asks Delhi Police to ramp up security after sloganeering
NEWDELHI: Jamia Millia Islamia university has asked Delhi Police to step up security near the campus after a group of people, which included some students, allegedly shouted provocative slogans at the campus.
The group, which claims to be from the university, had on Tuesday taken out a march to protest the alleged discrimination against Hindu students and the presence of “Jinnah lovers” in the campus.
“There are some students who were threatening students, particularly Hindu, for having a different viewpoint on incidents such as the Kathua rape and AMU controversy. This march was to fight that intimidation and discrimination,” said Rahul Tiwari, one of the organisers.
Tiwari said he is pursuing a postgraduate degree from Jamia Millia Islamia in Social Exclusion and Inclusive Policy.
He said they took out the march on the main road and raised slogans such as “Jinnah premi desh choro” (Jinnah lovers, leave the country) and “Hinduon ko darana band karo” (Stop threatening Hindus).
“We have submitted a memorandum to the university officials and police,” he said.
But the Jamia Millia Islamia administration said as the incident happened on the main road, they had no jurisdiction over it.
“This was done at the main road and not inside the campus. The atmosphere inside the campus is safe. We have asked Delhi Police to step up security near all access points of the university,” a university spokesperson said.
The spokesperson said there were no photographs of Jinnah or anything related to him in the campus.
Laraib Ahmad, a student and member of Congress-backed National Students’ Union of India (NSUI), said, “On the one hand, some people want to disturb peace on campus on religious lines but on the other hand many Jamia students have launched a campaign to defeat them and show students of all religions are safe here.”
