Scattered rain doesn’t provide relief, max temp rises to 42.2°C

NEWDELHI: The Capital witnessed isolated incidents of rainfall on Saturday with a thundersto­rm accompanie­d by light rain hitting Palam in southwest Delhi.

Parts of Aya Nagar also also reportedly witnessed a drizzle even as other parts of the city continued to reel witnessed the temperatur­e shooting up to 42.2 degrees Celsius on Saturday.

If the forecast of the regional meteorolog­ical centre (RMC) in New Delhi holds true, then another spell of thundersto­rm and light rain would hit parts of Delhi on Sunday. There is a possibilit­y of drizzle on Monday too.

“A thundersto­rm hit Palam area around 4pm. There were strong winds with gusts reaching up to 60 km per hour followed by light rain. While Palam recorded around 3.7 mm of rain, Aya Nagar registered 0.4 mm of rain,” said a senior official of the RMC.

At Safdarjung, three degrees above normal. On Friday the temperatur­e at Safdarjung had shot up to 42.8 degrees Celsius, the highest temperatur­e recorded in Delhi in the season so far. On Saturday, the minimum temperatur­e recorded at Safdarjung was 26.7 degrees Celsius.

Meteorolog­ical department officials said that Saturday’s rain was because of an approachin­g western disturbanc­e. “While on one hand a western disturbanc­e is likely to affect Delhi and NCR on Sunday, easterly winds are bringing in moisture. The heat, the western disturbanc­e and moisture laden winds are expected to trigger thundersto­rm and light rain,” said an official.
