NEWDELHI: From next month, twowheeler riders will not only get to buy fancy number plates, but will also be able to retain old registration numbers for the first time.

The Delhi cabinet on May 9 cleared a long pending proposal allowing the state transport department to extend the fancy number plate scheme to two wheelers. “After remaining suspended for nearly four years, bike enthusiasts will also be able take a registration number of their choice through e-auction from June. Moreover, two-wheeler owners wanting to retain number of their old vehicle for a new one will be able to do so sitting in their home,” said an official.

The proposal already has the approval of the lieutenant governor, but will be sent to him once again before it is notified for implementing the rules. Those wanting to retain the same number for their new vehicles will have to pay 10 per cent of the reserve price of that number or ₹2,500, whichever is greater. Until now, this facility is available only for four wheelers.

Once notified, the minimum price for two-wheelers for the golden number 0001 will be ₹50,000, while bidding for numbers from 0002 to 0009 will begin from ₹30,000.

Gauging the high demand for numbers like 0786, 1111, 9999, 7777 and 1000, the department has set a base price of ₹20,000 for them. Another category of numbers like 0100, 2222, 8888 and so on will be sold for ₹15,000.

Till now, there were no rules under which two-wheelers could be included in the fancy number plate scheme. VIP numbers from 0001 to 0100 are available only for four-wheelers. This despite the fact that the number of twowheelers in Delhi (over 67 lakh) is almost double compared to cars . While all premium numbers will be issued through e-auctions which will take place every 15 days, the government has created a fifth category where numbers will be issued on first-come-firstserve basis.
