NEWDELHI: The Delhi government schools are starting special spoken English classes for around 24,000 Class 10 students during summer vacations to help them speak the language fluently.

Most of the government schools are Hindi medium with some of them having one class in English medium.

“Between June 1 to June 30, students will be given five hours of classes on spoken English. After schools reopen after summer vacation, these classes will happen once or twice a week for an hour till August end,” said Saumya Gupta, director of directorate of education (DOE).

Under the programme, teachers from British Council of India, Macmillan Publication and Academy for Computer Learning (Gujarat) will give 160 hours of classroom teaching to students across government schools, Gupta said.

Gupta also pointed out that students, who pass Class 12 from government school often privately enrol themselves in spoken English classes. “We want to bring this facility to children after Class 10 grade at government expense through reputed agencies so that their confidence level improves,” she said.

When the classes start on June 1, the government will do a baseline assessment of students to find out the current level of proficiency of spoken English. A midline and a final assessment will also be done to see the progress.

A DOE official said that if the improvement is significant then the government may extend the scheme for Class 11 and 12 in next academic year.
