CARJACKING Armed assailants abduct driver in the SUV, dump him near Ggm eway

NEW DELHI : Four men robbed the driver of a fashion store designer of his car after holding him at gunpoint from outside the Ambience Mall in Vasant Kunj on Thursday evening.

Police said the car owner, Vikram Sharma, 44, had gone to the mall on Nelson Mandela Marg at 5.45 in his Fortuner SUV. “As I got down, my driver, Ashok Rai, drove to a nearby area where he could park the car till I returned. After an hour, when I called my driver, his phone was switched off,” Sharma said.

Unable to contact Rai, Sharma stepped out of the mall to look for him. “I made a few calls and even called up home but my driver had not reached there. Around 7.30pm, I received a call from an unknown number. It was Rai. He told me that he was near Munirka on the Rao Tula Ram Marg,” he said.

Rai told the police that he was waiting for Sharma when four men in a silver sedan approached him. In his statement to the police, Rai said, “One of them quietly came near and held me from behind. As I struggled to get free from his clutches, two more men got down from the sedan and entered my car. They pulled me to the rear seat and pointed a gun at me. They threatened me not to make noise.”

Rai told police the four men took his cellphone, ATM cards, cash and other valuables.

“They drove around for at least two hours. And then they threw me off the car at Delhi-gurugram expressway flyover. The men then sped away in the Fortuner and the other silver car,” Rai said.

Sharma said his car had a tablet, a laptop with some important

documents and cash.

“It is quite shocking that during the evening, in an area like Vasant Kunj such an incident can happen. This is really frightening,” he said.

Based on Rai’s complaint Delhi Police have registered a case under sections 394 (causing hurt in committing robbery) and 365 (Kidnapping or abducting with intent secretly and wrongfully to confine person) of the Indian Penal Code at Vasant Kunj North police station.

Deputy commissioner of police (southwest), Milind Dumbere said there is no breakthrough so far. The matter is being investigated.

An officer said police are checking CCTV camera footage from the area to identify the four men.

“We have informed police posted at the state borders. We are probing the role of a Haryana based gang. The gang has recently been involved in similar incidents in other parts of the city,” the officer said.
