DUTA writes to UGC opposing St Stephen’s autonomy
NEWDELHI: The Delhi University Teacher’s Association (DUTA) wrote to the University Grants Commission (UGC) on Friday opposing its move to grant autonomous status to St Stephen’s College.
On May 18, Hindustan Times had reported that an inspection was carried out at St Stephen’s College by a committee that had been set up to examine application from colleges for grant of autonomous status.
Officials said the inspection would pave way for the college to receive an autonomous status, most likely, at the UGC meeting scheduled on May 24.
The college had applied for an autonomous status last year.
If the UGC clears the proposal, St Stephens College will be the first such autonomous college in DU.
A section of Delhi University teachers have been boycotting evaluation work of undergraduate courses since May 9 to oppose the move to grant autonomy to DU colleges and to demand withdrawal of a UGC notification on formula to calculate reservation in teaching jobs.
“Privatisation of public funded institutions will badly hit the educational prospects of students coming from marginalised sections and women students. Even middle-class families will find it difficult to send their children for higher education,” Delhi University Teacher’s Association said in a statement. NEW DELHI: The South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC) laid the foundation stone for the first automatic multi-level car parking project in its jurisdiction on Friday.
The facility will be constructed in Rajouri Garden and will have five floors, space for parking of 200 cars. It will be ready for use in one year, SDMC officials said.
“The parking lot will be located in main Rajouri Garden market. It will be based on latest technology and will provide details such as available car space, peak hour demand at the entrance. Enough staff will be deployed inside the complex to ensure quick retrieval of cars,” said SDMC mayor Narendra Chawla.
The SDMC has already made functional five normal multilevel parking lots at Munirka, Rajouri Garden, New Friends Colony, Kalkaji and Malviya Nagar with parking capacity of 1,500 cars. There is project for constructing 14 more multi-level parkings to provide capacity of parking for more than 3,500 cars soon.
