Gangster wanted for lawyer’s murder in Bihar held in city

NEW DELHI: The Delhi Police on Friday arrested a criminal wanted for the sensationa­l murder of a former public prosecutor and senior advocate of Gopalganj, Bihar, in 2015.

The man, 36-year-old Wazir Ahmed alias Daddu Miya, a resident of Gopalganj, worked for several gangs as a sharpshoot­er. A loaded pistol was recovered from his possession, police said.

Deputy commission­er of police (south east) Chinmoy Biswal said that on Friday, a team of the south-east district’s antiauto theft squad got a tip-off that a sharpshoot­er would go to Jamia Nagar to meet his acquaintan­ce.

“A trap was laid at the identified stretch and around 5.30 pm, Ahmed was spotted coming from the Kalindi Kunj side. On seeing the police, Ahmed tried to escape. Following a short chase, he was arrested and a loaded country- made pistol was recovered from him,” the DCP said.

Ahmed was earlier arrested in an arms act case and sent to jail in 2002. After he was released on

bail the same year, he fled to Saudia Arabia where he worked as an iron welder till 2007, police said.

On his return, he was hiding in Delhi and Mumbai to evade arrest, police said.

“In 2007, he returned and joined the gang of one Mintoo Singh in Gopalganj. Mintoo and Ahmed hatched a plan to kill former public prosecutor and senior advocate Tripurari Sharan Sharma of Gopalganj in Bihar, following Singh’s previous enmity with the lawyer. The lawyer was shot dead in his chamber,” the DCP said. Singh was later killed in a gangwar in 2016.

Since then, Ahmed has been evading arrest.
