NEW DELHI: The Delhi Police on Tuesday said they have arrested a 26-year-old ‘drug addict’ for allegedly killing his parents with the help of two contract killers whom he had hired through a common friend for Rs 2.5 lakh. One of the contract killers has also been arrested while the other continues to evade his arrest.

Police said Abdul Rehman was enraged with his parents because they had stopped giving him money, which he used to spend on drugs and on his girlfriend in Kanpur, and were against his decision to marry her. They said Rehman also wanted to lay his hands on Rs 5.5 lakh that they had recently received in a property deal besides jewellery and ancestral properties.

The bodies of Shamim Ahmed,55, and his wife Taslim Bano,55, were found at their home in south Delhi’s Zakir Nagar near Jamia Nagar on April 28. The police had initially suspected it to be a case of suicide as they had found the house locked and there were no signs of forced entry or ransacking.

Police said Rs 5.5 lakh, jewellery and other valuable items in the house were found untouched. Chinmoy Biswal, deputy commissioner of police (south-east), said the couple was found unconscious in their bedroom and the main wooden door was broken when police reached there after receiving a call about their deaths.

During the initial enquiries, Biswal said, it was learnt that the door was broken by the couple’s son, relatives and neighbours. Rehman told police that he had

returned home late and found the door locked. When his parents did not open the door, he left and slept at his friend’s home, assuming that they were asleep.

Police said Rehman returned the next morning and called his relatives and neighbours, who in turn broke open the door.

Police said they did not find anything suspicious in the statements of Rehman. However, the couple’s autopsy reports revealed that the two had been smothered to death.

“We registered a case of murder and began probe. Technical surveillance was mounted and some discrepancies were found in Rehman’s statement,” Biswal said . The probe team grilled Reh- man again on Monday. Confronted with evidence, Rehman confessed to the crime. It led to the arrest of one of the contract killers Nadeem Khan, a 32-yearold carpenter, from Delhi’s Nangloi. Another contract killer Guddu is at large, said Biswal.

“Rehman disclosed that he hired Khan and Guddu and promised to pay them Rs 2.5 lakh if they helped him in killing his parents. On April 27 night, Rehman opened the main door using the spare keys. The two overpowered the couple and Rehman smothered his parents by putting bedsheet and blanket on their faces,” Biswal said.

Probe revealed that Rehman hated his parents as they had allegedly forced him to get married. His wife divorced him around a year ago after filing a dowry harassment case. Rehman’s parents blamed him for the divorce police said.

A diploma holder in animation, Rehman worked in a call centre but left the job because of his drug addiction.
