Police said Pawan Kumar, 21, was strangled to death by his fellow inmate Kishan around 2 am for allegedly refusing to follow instructions.

Kumar, who lived in Delhi’s Sultanpuri, was originally from Aligarh, Uttar Pradesh. Investigation so far revealed that on Monday night, Kumar was bullied by Kishan to bring him food and make his bed. Other prisoners told the police that Kumar had refused to do Kishan’s work.

Police suspect Kishan was trying to intimidate Kumar and establish his supremacy in jail.

Police said Kishan, who has many cases against him, including murder, is in prison since 2013. Kumar was booked for theft and lodged in prison four months ago.

Kumar’s family members, who were outside the hospital, blamed jail officials for negli- gence. The family said there were many injury marks on his body.

Additional i nspector general(prisons) Raj Kumar said a magisterial inquiry was being held. “There was some dispute, which the accused prisoner has not disclosed. The inquiry will establish what led to the murder.”

DP Rohini Rajeesh Gupta said police would seek Kishan’s production warrant and interrogate him.
