Fearing robbers, help ‘jumps’ to her death

-

NEWDELHI: A 30-year-old domestic help died after she allegedly jumped through the window of a second-floor house in central Delhi’s Karol Bagh on seeing robbers in the house on Wednesday.

Police said the five robbers had held her employer and another male domestic help hostage. On seeing the woman fall, the robbers fled the house, without taking any valuables.

The deceased was identified as Geeta Devi. Police said the incident took place at House No. 22, Park Lane Road, opposite Ajmal Khan Park. Five armed robbers barged into the house that belongs to an elderly couple.

A senior police officer, not authorised to speak to the media, said, “The house owner, Avinash Bhalla, was home with his male help. His wife was out of the country to visit their children. According to Bhalla, around 12.40pm, when five men barged into the house and tied him and his male help to a chair. Just few minutes later, Geeta reached the house for work. Since Bhalla and his help were already hostage, the robbers on spotting Geeta, rushed to catch her. Horrified, Geeta ran towards the bathroom.”

Bhalla said the next thing they saw was the five men fleeing the house, police said.

“Later, Bhalla realised Geeta had fallen to her death through a window. It is not clear whether she jumped to escape robbers or whether she was thrown out. As she fell, neighbours started gathering, seeing which the robbers fled,” the officer said.
