GHAZIABAD: A 58-year-old man and his 55-year-old wife are in a critical condition after robbers brutally beat them up, tied them with wires and took away ₹85,000 in cash and jewellery from their house at a village in Murad Nagar, Ghaziabad late Wednesday night, police said.

The couple suffered critical head injuries and have been admitted at a private hospital in Ghaziabad. They also suspect sexual assault on the woman.

Forensic teams and the crime branch are investigating the case. The police are probing the role of a suspected local informant and the Bawaria gang behind the incident.

The police suspect sexual assault as the woman’s lower garments were found at a different location in the house. The couple’s son is in the army and lives in Madhya Pradesh.

“We came to know about the incident when the milkman arrived around 6am. The couple survived the assault. The victims were hit on their heads and the injuries seem to be inflicted by rods, sticks and even sharpedged weapons. The victim had withdrawn ₹85,000 from the bank yesterday and the money was taken away with some jewellery the woman was wearing,” said a relative of the couple.

“Seeing the nature of injuries and the ransacked scene of crime, we suspect the robbers could be 4-5 in number. We have informed their son who will arrive soon,” said another relative.

The police said the robbers scaled the rear wall of the house and tied up the couple with power cables. But the exact sequence of events was not known as the couple is unconscious. They said the modus operandi looked like that of the Bawaria gangs, that are known to strike along highways and brutally assault their victims.

“The lower garments of the woman were at another place. We suspect it could be in normal course or due to sexual assault. We are waiting for the victim to regain consciousness. We have roped in forensic team and the crime branch. We suspect there could be some local acting as an informant to the gang,” Vaibhav Krishna, senior superintendent of police, Ghaziabad, said.

A spokesperson of Yashoda Hospital in Ghaziabad said both the patients were in a critical state and suffered severe head injuries.
