Drug peddler tries to run over cop, arrested after a chase
NEW DELHI: A police officer was injured when a suspected drug peddler allegedly tried to crush him under his car after a police team intercepted the man’s vehicle for checking, during the early hours on Thursday in Shahdara. The man was caught after a chase by the officer and two constables who were accompanying the senior police officer. Police recovered 100 grams hashish and some syringes from the car.
Police identified the accused as 26-year-old Pranav Chauhan, a resident of Surya Niketan in Anand Vihar.
Deputy commissioner of police (Shahdara), Nupur Prasad said, around 1am, Harsh Indora, an IPS officer on probation, who was deployed on night duty, found during patrolling that a suspicious Toyota Corolla Altis car was parked on the side of the road.
“The officer, accompanied by two constables, intercepted the suspicious vehicles and parked his gypsy in front the car in order to prevent it from fleeing. The police team then asked the driver of the car to come out. When Chauhan stepped out of the car he was asked to unlock the boot. On this, on the pretext of taking keys to open the boot, Chauhan sat in the car and immediately accelerated it in reverse,” Prasad said.
The DCP said that since the door on the driver’s side was still open, the car hit Indora and he was dragged for a few metres as he attempted to stop the vehicle.
Constable Sunil Godara, who was accompanying Indora, then jumped onto the car while Indora and police vehicle driver Ashok Kumar followed the car in their Gypsy, police said.
“The car was finally stopped when Godara forcefully turned the steering of Chauhan’s car and the vehicle rammed a pavement. On checking, police found the contraband concealed in a steel container, from the boot of the car. Some syringes and blades were also recovered,” Prasad said.
During interrogation, police found that Chauhan has seven other criminal cases against him in Delhi. Chauhan told police that he used to purchase drugs from one Ashutosh, a resident of Baghpat and one Manish whose address is yet to be ascertained, the officer said.
