Man throws acid on wife in Karawal Nagar, kills self later

NEW DELHI: A 40-year-old man allegedly threw acid on his wife and then committed suicide by consuming the acid in northeast Delhi’s Karawal Nagar on Saturday afternoon. The incident took place after the couple reportedly had an altercation.

Police said the two daughters of the couple suffered burns when they tried to save their mother and some splashes of the acid fell on them.

Initial probe into the case has revealed that the man, identified by a single name, Yashpal, suspected his wife Uma of having an extramarital affair. They often had fights and quarrels over the issue. The woman’s family members have alleged that Yashpal often tortured and beat up their daughter over petty issues.

Police said all the four injured family members were admitted to Guru Teg Bahadur hospital, where doctors later declared Yashpal brought dead. The condition of Uma was critical since she had suffered more than 40% burns on her face and upper portion of her body. Uma’s two daughters were declared out of danger through but were not discharged till Sunday evening.

A senior police officer said that the incident was reported around 3.15 pm when the police control room was informed about the suicide attempt by a man. A police team rushed to the spot and found Yashpal unconscious. His wife and two children were also spotted lying near the bed, screaming in pain . The four were rushed to a hospital and later a case was registered.

During probe, a police officer said, it was learnt that the couple had entered into an altercation over some personal issue on Sunday that later turned ugly. “Yashpal went to the other room and took out a bottle of acid that he had hidden in a cupboard. He first threatened his wife but when she did not stop the fight, he threw the acid on her. Their two daughters were injured while trying to save their mother,” said the officer.
