NEWDELHI: Apart from earmarking specific parking spaces for residents and setting a limit of two cars for each floor, the South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC) is preparing documents for the construction of at least 25 stack parking lots as part of a pilot project to decongest roads.

The 25 sites will be located in areas such as the Rajouri Garden main road, Greater Kailash M Block, Malviya Nagar main market, Safdarjung Development Area Market, near Adchini Village, near Hauz Khas Apartments among other places, a senior SDMC officer said.

Once the project is complete, it will create space for at least 3,700 cars. December 2019 is the deadline for the parking lots.

“Each parking lot will have space for 100 to 250 cars. Work on these projects will be completed in nine months of issuing of tenders. Visitors will be able to book space at these places in advance by using SDMC’S parking app,” a senior official said.

The stack parking is part of the Lieutenant Governor’s move to decongest roads, create no-parking zones and allow hassle-free movement of vehicles, especially emergency vehicles such as ambulances, fire brigade, etc.

The parking lots will be open round the clock so that residents use them at night.

“We have already opened our existing underground sites for night parking and people in the neighbourhoods are using them in large numbers. The depart-

ment is holding meetings with other agencies to transfer more such sites for parking sites,” said Shikha Rai, standing committee chairman, SDMC.

The corporation, as part of the pilot project, has chosen Lajpat Nagar II and III and Kailash Colony to experiment with a new concept in which the civic body seeks to organise parking in the common areas so that internal roads are free for the movement of emergency vehicles and residents.

SDMC officials said those who have more than two vehicles -- in smaller colonies, the space may be limited to one car - - will have to make their own arrangements outside the colony such as parking in paid parking spaces.
