Cops question property dealer from south Delhi
PROBE Police are asking Nasir how his passport was inside the SUV in which Bharti and his associates were travelling
NEW DELHI: Delhi Police on Monday detained Mohammad Nasir, a property dealer from south Delhi, whose passport was found in the Ford Endeavour SUV in which gangster Rajesh Bharti and his four associates were travelling on Saturday.
Bharti and three others died in a shootout with the police at around 1 pm on Saturday.
Nasir was later handed over to a crime branch team after the case was transferred to them from the Fatehpur Beri police.
“The crime branch team will now probe the case further,” said Alok Kumar, joint commissioner of police (crime). Nasir was not arrested till late Monday night.
Police said Nasir is an alleged suspect in the case of a near-fatal attack on 65-year-old orthopaedic surgeon Hans Nagar at his farmhouse in south Delhi’s Fatehpur Beri on April 28.
Three to four attackers had fired nearly two dozen bullets at Nagar’s car while he was returning to his farmhouse.
He sustained three bullet injuries. Nagar had retaliated by firing at least 13 rounds from his licensed pistol.
Police officials associated with the case said they are questioning Nasir to probe how his passport was found inside the vehicle. Police said the vehicle belongs to a man named Sanjjt, another property dealer from south Delhi’s Lado Sarai. One of the officers said police are looking to arrest Sanjit under charges of harbouring criminals. Sanjit and Nasir are friends, said police.
“Our initial probe has hinted that Nasir had been in contact with Bharti and his gang members through Sanjit. We suspect that both Sanjit and Nasir used Bharti’s ‘Kranti gang’ to threaten people and grab their land. It has been learnt that Nasir and Sanjit were also eyeing a property owned by the orthopaedic surgeon. It is possible they were also involved in the attack,” said the officer.
Bharti, his associates Sanjeet Vidrohi, Umesh Don and Viresh Rana were gunned down during the shootout in south Delhi’s Chhatarpur.
Police said at least five accomplices of Bharti had managed to flee in another car when the raiding team intercepted Bharti’s SUV. “Both the cars came out of Sanjit’s farmhouse. And that is why we believe that Sanjit had been providing safe shelter to the criminals,” added the officer.
L-G Anil Baijal visited AIIMS to meet policemen who were injured during the encounter.
A medical board will conduct autopsy on the bodies of Vidrohi, Umesh and Rana on Tuesday. Even on Monday, nobody from Bharti’s family turned up to claim his body.
