POLICE SAY BEFORE COMMITTING SUICIDE, THE COUPLE THREW A THREEYEAROLD GIRL, WHO WAS THE DAUGHTER OF ONE OF THE WOMEN, INTO SABARAMATI RIVER

AHMEDABAD: A lesbian couple committed suicide in Ahmedabad by jumping into the Sabarmati river after they threw a three-year-old girl into the water. The girl was the daughter of one of the deceased women, Gujarat police said on Monday.

“They (the woman) apparently committed suicide in the wee hours. It appears that they first threw the kid into the river before jumping off the Elisbridge’’, said MS Singh, inspector at women’s police station in Ahmedabad.

Police said the women had left two suicide notes —one scribbled on a paper plate and the other on the wall of the riverfront— both of which read: “We are leaving this world which will never allow us to be one’’.

The deceased have been identified as Asha Thakor,30, her daughter Megha and Bhavna Thakor,28 who has left behind two sons.

“Except for Asha’s brother-inlaw, it seems the women’s other relatives had little idea about their relationship,’’ Singh said. The officer added that Asha’s husband Himmatsinh Thakor had fallen ill after the incident and was under treatment.

The police said they would question the husbands of both the deceased women to get clarity on the case but clarified that they had ruled out the possibility of the women taking the extreme step due to harassment from family members.

“The note also said that no man was with them while committing suicide, which seems like their bid to give a clean chit to their spouses’’, a police officer said, requesting anonymity.

“The two women committed suicide due to complications arising out of their lesbian relationship,” news agency PTI quoted a police official as saying.

According to police, initial reports suggested that the two women were co-workers at a factory in Bavla and are likely to have arrived in Ahmedabad city on Sunday night.
