NEW DELHI: Every property in neighbourhoods under the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) will get a unique identification number to allow owners to avail of all a host of civic services such as filing property tax, paying utility bills and sanctioning building plans.

The NDMC started the process of issuing digital door numbers to all properties last week.

There are 50,000 properties in NDMC’S jurisdiction and of this 291 properties have already been surveyed and given numbers.

“We have already done the exercise in Golf Links and on Monday, a survey started at Connaught Place.the aim is to replace lengthy addresses of properties and households with a unique code, which will help indicate GPS location, road number of the property, photo, owner’s name and postal address,” a senior NDMC official said.

“This is an integrated service where the consumer can now access and pay electricity, property tax and water details using one unique number. Not only that, it will help NDMC officials in identifying how many people have paid their electricity and water bills, making it easier for us to maintain records,” said an official.

The number is a nine-digit alpha-numeric code of which the first two digits stand for the ‘locality’, the next two for ‘street number, the next three for “house number’ and the last three indicate the “floor’ and ‘unit” of the property.

“We are in talks with some food establishments so that consumers can locate food joints near them easily. Ambulances can also reach locations easily using the GPS link,” said officials

The civic agency has set a deadline of November 2018 to complete the project. According to the NDMC, this is a one-of-itskind initiative and will provide scope for integration of services in the future.

“Unlike other civic agencies that have planned to only integrate property tax details in the unique number issued to properties in their jurisdiction, we are attaching the number of facilities that can be accessed by property owners even from out- side the city,” said official.

“Since all the details are integrated with Google, any person can use this code to get the GPS location for a particular house number. But he/she can’t access other information of the property,” said senior NDMC official.

According to the official, some names and places in the NDMC area are very easy to find, but the remaining properties i n some areas or other shops and businesses are not.

“It will help us to verify the status of a building or if any additional construction has been done,” said the official.

The project was implemented after mapping of all properties with the unique smart addressing system for urban properties.

This is an integrated service where the consumer can now access and pay electricity, property tax and water details using one unique number. Also, it will help NDMC officials in maintaining records.
