Truck with 23 offences crushes 20-yr-old architect
NEWDELHI: A 20-year-old architect was killed and her mother injured when their scooter was rammed by a truck in north Delhi’s Keshavpuram on Thursday evening, police said.
The truck was found to be prosecuted for 23 traffic violations, including dangerous driving, over the last four years, said Aslam Khan, deputy commissioner of police (north-west).
“On four of those occasions, it was the same driver involved in the latest accident,” said the DCP.
Truck driver Chote Kumar was caught from the accident spot by local residents and handed over to the police.
The deceased was identified as Khushboo Sharma, who worked for an architecture firm in south Delhi’s Vasant Kunj. She lived with her parents and siblings in north Delhi’s Tri Nagar.
Since Khusbhoo returned home from work late, her mother would ride a scooter to pick her from the Kanhaiya Nagar metro station every evening.
On Thursday evening, Khushboo sat on her mother’s scooter around 8.30 pm when a truck headed in the same direction hit the two-wheeler from behind.
“Khushboo was flung in the air and she landed under the truck’s wheel. She was killed on the spot. Her mother was injured, but was discharged from hospital,” said an investi- gator.
Even as the mother-daughter duo was rushed to a hospital, local residents caught hold of the truck driver and damaged his vehicle.
They thrashed driver Kanhaiya Kumar, but police rescued him before they could cause serious injuries.
Around 300 people protested on the road but senior police officers reached the spot and persuaded them to return home.
“It is yet to be ascertained if the driver was speeding, but his medical examination confirmed he was not drunk,” said the DCP.
The accident happened a few metres from the spot where a girl was killed and 18 other students injured when a speeding truck rammed a school van in April.
