After the completion of all projects of multilevel, stack and surface car parkings lots, we will be able to create space for 19,642 cars, increasing the total estimated car space in our jurisdiction to 50,675.

ADESH KUMAR GUPTA, mayor of North Corporation.

NEWDELHI: North Delhi Municipal Corporation wants to add parking spots for nearly 20,000 vehicles in the area under its jurisdiction in a project that would bring relief to motorists in a city where finding regulated parking space is a daily struggle. The civic body has parking space for only 31,033 vehicles.

The projects would be completed before June 2021, said a senior official of the civic body. It will focus on stack parking, which would allow cars to be stacked vertically, increasing parking space and minimising land use.

Delhi L-G Anil Baijal, in his many meetings with officials on transport and traffic solutions for Delhi, has suggested that agencies look at building stack parking. Only two stack parking spots exist in north Delhi’s busy Karol Bagh and Paharganj areas that can accommodate 180 vehicles. According to the plan, 16 stack parking would be built that will accommodate 1,361 cars.

“Stack parking is better as compared to surface or multi- level parking. These can be constructed in limited space and needs six to eight months for construction. Moreover, these can be dismantled easily. We have already started the tendering process for five stack car parking lots,” said a senior North Corporation official on condition of anonymity.

The officer said 13 more multilevel parking spaces will be built in addition to the current six.

“Multilevel parking spots take 18-24 months for completion and can’t be redeveloped easily. In fact, the L-G has also advised us to focus more on stack parking,” the official added.

The tendering process has also started for developing 29 more surface parking lots in addition to the existing 95. These 29 surface parkings will be operational by September 2018 and will have a capacity to hold 6,260 vehicles.

“After the completion of all these projects of multilevel, stack and surface car parkings lots we will be able to create space for 19,642 cars, increasing the total estimate car space in our jurisdiction to 50,675,” said Adesh Kumar Gupta, mayor of North Corporation.

North Corporation has the largest area under its jurisdiction, and some of the city’s most populated and busiest markets such as Karol Bagh, Chawri Bazar, Chandni Chowk and Pitampura come under its jurisdiction.

“Most of the new parking spots are will be built near these marketplaces. There is a plan to develop at least five stack parking lots in old Delhi areas, including Fatehpuri, Jama Masjid, Idgah Road, and Yamuna Bazaar,” said Yoginder Singh Mann, spokesperson for North Corporation.
