NEW DELHI: The Delhi Police on Saturday rescued a 12-year-boy, who was abducted from near his residence in northwest Delhi’s Swaroop Nagar on June 12. The child was kidnapped by his uncle and his associates for ransom, police said.

According to the police, the 12-year-old, Bharat, had gone to a nearby market around 3pm when he was abducted by two unidentified men in a car. His father Brijmohan, a garment trader, lodged a missing persons’ complaint after the child failed to return home. Following an intensive search operation which led to almost no lead, the police set up a specialised team to look into the kidnapping.

Deputy commissioner of police (northwest), Aslam Khan said that CCTV footages from the area were scanned and it was found that the registration number of the car used in the kidnapping was of Uttar Pradesh. “The search for vehicle was intensified and the owner was identified as one Shiv Kumar in Fatehabad, UP,” the DCP said.

She said that a police team was then sent to Fatehabad which laid a trap and Kumar was arrested. “On questioning he revealed that he is Brijmohan’s cousin brother. He also disclosed that he and his aide Narendra Kumar had planned to abduct Bharat and demand ransom from Brijmohan. The duo had also planned to kill Bharat if the ransom amount was not delivered,” the officer said.
